Charity Events with Smarter Giving Charities

Did you know that right here in the Quarter we’ve a host of fabulous charities organising a load of different events across the year for people like you. So you can enjoy being involved and feel good that your sponsorship money is supporting local charities.

Through our Smarter Giving corporate social responsibility programme, we’ve pulled together a list of forthcoming charity events from dressing up as a superhero for an organised run in Regent’s Park to abseiling down St Mary’s Hospital, cycling from London to Brighton, participating in The Snowdon Trek, sky diving and more, there are loads of ways to get involved and have fun whilst supporting some very worthy causes.

All you need do is get the date in your diary, register with the charity and get some sponsorship together – it might be that incentive you need to get fit!

Charities

Greenhouse Sports is a London-based charity committed to using sport to help young people living in disadvantaged communities realise their full potential. Their coaches work full time in schools and the community to provide outstanding sports programmes that nurture social, thinking, emotional and physical skills that equip young people for life. The Marylebone Project provides 112 long and short term beds to homeless women and offers essential facilities and support to women who visit their rough sleeper’s drop-in at the Marylebone Centre. The Marylebone Centre also delivers education, employment and training opportunities, and meaningful activities in order to support service users into independent living. St John’s Hospice is an independent charity located within the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in St John’s Wood, providing specialised palliative care to more than 3,000 terminally-ill patients and their families every year. For more information about challenge events, call Alice on 020 7806 4074 or visit their website.

St Mungo’s is a homelessness charity and housing association which provides a bed and support to more than 2,500 people a night who are either homeless or at risk, and work to end homelessness and rebuild lives. For more visit their website plus sign up to their events e-newsletter.

West London Day Centre is a local charity supporting people affected by homelessness, helping them to find accommodation and employment. In 2016 they are offering lots of fun sporting challenges to get involved with. 8 March Fundraising Coffee Morning (The Marylebone Project) Raise money for the Marylebone Project and raise awareness of the issues affecting many of the women at the Marylebone Project by hosting a fundraising coffee morning on or around International Women’s Day on the 8th March. Download an information pack and get tips and recipes from their Catering Coordinator Leyla here.

14 – 15 April    Olympic Orbit Abseil (Greenhouse Sports) Scale the ArcelorMittal Orbit, the UK’s tallest sculpture at 262 feet – this is an un-missable way to see the city skyline. Go over the edge and on an adrenaline-fuelled ride down to the ground, taking in the breath-taking views 20 miles across London.

 24 April – London Marathon (Greenhouse Sports) This is a challenge of a lifetime, but by running the London Marathon 2016 for Greenhouse Sports, you’ll be making a difference long after you’ve passed the finish line.

27 April – St Mary’s Hospital Abseil (COSMIC) Experience the stunning rooftop views of London before abseiling down the side of the QEQM building and celebrating this enormous achievement as your feet hit the ground.

30 April & 1 May – Tough Mudder (St Mungo’s) Test your grit and determination with this 10 – 12 mile mud run. Participants will be pushed to their limits, completing some of the most challenging obstacles out there.

8 May – Run Hackney (St Mungo’s) This is a flat, fast half marathon that shows off Hackney and its many green spaces as well as the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

15 May – Superhero Run (West London Day Centre) Join over 1,000 people in Regents Park for a sponsored 5km or 10km superhero themed fun run!

30 May – BUPA 10K Run (COSMIC) – Deadline this Friday London’s biggest 10K race, with the route taking in some of London’s most iconic sites along the way including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, and many more!

11 & 12 June – Senate House Abseil (St Mungo’s) No prior experience is necessary to take part as you receive all your training and abseiling kit on the day. St Mungo’s will also have a photographer to capture the moment you start your descent.

12 June – COSMIC Walk Sponsored 5K Walk starting at Paddington Green Recreation Ground, the walk takes in the greenery of the park, and ends at Paddington Green school.

10 July – British 10K Run (St John’s Hospice & West London Day Centre) Run 10km through central London passing by some of London’s most iconic sights this summer.

31 July – Cycle the Prudential RideLondon 100 (COSMIC, Greenhouse Sports, St John’s Hospice & St Mungo’s) Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic Games, Prudential RideLondon-Surrey follows a 100-mile scenic route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside.

11 September – London To Brighton Cycle (West London Day Centre) Cycle 54 miles from London to Brighton, through scenic English countryside.

16 – 26 September – Climb Kilimanjaro (Greenhouse Sports) This challenge takes you on a journey up the highest free-standing mountain in the world, through the more remote Macheme route, offering breath-taking views and impressive surroundings.

24 – 25 September – Snowdon Trek (COSMIC) Breathtaking, rugged scenery and rewarding trekking awaits those who take on this one day charity challenge.

24 September – Tough Mudder (St John’s Hospice) Designed by ex-service men to test your stamina and your team camaraderie, Tough Mudder is a 12-13 mile assault course.

7 – 16 October – Great Wall Of China Trek (St John’s Hospice) Trek the iconic wall and experience rural villages along the way, in support of St John’s Hospice.

4 December – Santa Run (West London Day Centre & COSMIC) Join over 4,000 people for London’s biggest Santa Run in Victoria Park and take part in the 5km or 10km fun run.
