Exciting New Plans For Oxford Street And Wider Area

Westminster City Council has announced exciting new plans for the future of the Oxford Street District to reinvent the nation’s high street, boost London’s recovery and provide benefits to the surrounding areas. The plans feature the bold ‘Marble Arch Hill’, a temporary visitor attraction planned for this summer (subject to planning permission) which will allow visitors a new perspective over this iconic district, including towards Marylebone and the Quarter.

Marble Arch Hill will bring the tranquillity of Hyde Park a little closer to Oxford Street, and could be enjoyed by up to 200,000 people while it is in place, bringing visitors into the surrounding areas and benefitting local retail, hospitality and leisure venues.

The plans, which aim to restore the area as the ‘must visit’ destination of choice for visitors, were in development before the Coronavirus pandemic, but have been adapted to respond to the changes in shopping and working habits that have accelerated over the last 12 months. Sustainability is a key focus, with a major greening programme and pedestrian-first approach a key part of the plans, and a range of temporary public realm improvements on Oxford Street due to begin within weeks including pop-up parks, additional pedestrian space and greening projects.
