Talk Club In Baker Street

A nationwide talking club for men has created a local group in Baker Street. Talk Club is a safe space for men to share their thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment. It allows men to open up, with the aim of improving mental health.

The confidential, informal get-togethers usually see about six to eight participants catch up for a couple of hours. Men are invited to share how they are feeling out of 10 at the start and end of the meet, what they are happy about, and plans for mental fitness that week.

Talk Club groups have been meeting virtually via Facebook and video conferencing during the coronavirus lockdown. In fact, the society’s main Facebook group saw a 30% increase in members during the stay-at-home restrictions.

Co-founder Ben Akers launched Talk Club following the suicide of his childhood best friend Steve Yates in 2014. Ben made a documentary about male mental health, and Talk Club was the legacy. Run by volunteers, each location has three ‘captains’ that help build the community and, when the time is right, set up regular in-person meetings.

Talk Club has groups around the UK as well as two groups in Australia and one in the USA. A special group also exists for the male deaf community. You can join the main Talk Club Facebook group here to find out more, and the Baker Street Facebook page here.

You can also visit the Talk Club website for more information on starting a local group and becoming a ‘captain’.  This weekend the founder of Talk Club took part in a TEDx talk where you can find out more about the club

Talk Club Baker Street is currently looking for a host venue for its meetings. If you can spare a room that can seat around eight men and follows social distancing guidelines email racheal@bakerstreetq.co.uk. Visit our webpage for more wellbeing resources
