The Lights Are On!
27 November 2020
Our Christmas Lights are up and glowing once more, adding a bit of extra sparkle to the Quarter this winter. The scheme, reflecting pieces of the area’s history and culture, features geese from Sherlock Holmes’ only Christmas story, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle which illuminate the Marylebone Road/Baker Street junction. Outside 55 Baker Street you will find horses, cogs, ice skates and crowns, celebrating the Victorian Baker Street Bazaar. In Portman Square Garden the arches with gold and blue baubles represent Lady Montagu’s famous blue stocking parties and in Manchester Square Garden hundreds of pea lights in the trees symbolise the hundreds of candles that would have once lit up the long since gone Marylebone Pleasure Gardens. Linking everything together are the beautiful motifs on the lampposts running along Baker Street, reflecting the grand architecture of Baker Street Station.
You can find out more about the scheme with our Christmas Lights here, which also features some suggestions on where you might stop off on your tour of the lights to shop and eat. You can also join our brilliant Blue Badge Guide Mark who will take you on a tour of the lights and tell you all about the fascinating stories that inspired them. Find out more here
